The Italian Spinone is an ancient Italian pointing breed whose griffon ancestors were described in Selincourt's 1683 'Le parfait chasseur' and painted by masters such as Mantegna in the 15th century. Solidly built with strong bone and a coarse, harsh coat, it works any terrain tirelessly, pushing through thorny cover and diving willingly into cold water, and is also an excellent retriever. Naturally sociable, docile and patient, it makes a gentle companion that needs daily exercise and occasional hand-stripping.
