The Bloodhound descends from hounds kept by the 7th-century monk Hubert, later patron saint of hunters, and was bred at the Saint-Hubert monastery in the Ardennes before William the Conqueror brought the type to England in the 11th century, where the name arose from blooded hound, meaning purebred. The most powerful of all scent hounds, its extraordinary nose is still used by police to trace missing persons. Gentle, dignified and devoted, it needs secure handling once on a scent and care for its folds, ears and deep chest.
