Radianthus magnifica
A large anemone with a flared oral disc 20-50 cm across, reaching 1 m in some specimens. The column ranges from electric blue to green, red, pink, purple and brown, and that bright colour is the origin of the name magnifica.
Radianthus magnifica, the magnificent or Ritteri anemone, is a large stichodactylid anemone widespread across the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific, from the east coast of Africa including the Red Sea to Polynesia and from southern Japan to Australia and New Caledonia. It attaches to hard substrates in well-lit, current-swept positions from the surface down to about 20 m, with observations to 40 m; SeaLifeBase records a range of 1-50 m. The flared oral disc is 20-50 cm across and reaches 1 m in some specimens, carrying numerous tentacles over 8 cm long arranged in concentric circles in multiples of six. The column colour is vivid, from electric blue through green, red, pink, purple and brown, and is the origin of the specific name magnifica. It feeds both through photosynthesis by its zooxanthellae and by capturing prey with its tentacles. Hosting 12 species of anemonefish, it is a highly generalist host, and is still widely known under its former name Heteractis magnifica.
