About

Stichodactyla haddoni is widespread across the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific, from Mauritius to Fiji and from the Ryukyu Islands of southern Japan to Australia. It lives on sandy substrates, burying its foot in the soft mud or sand outside the reef. The folded oral disc reaches 50-80 cm in diameter with a tentacle-free oral area of 1-2 cm at the centre. The tentacles have rounded tips that may be green, yellow, grey or, rarely, blue and pink, and short and long tentacles alternate around the circumference. The column carries small non-adhesive verrucae, usually the same colour as the column and barely visible. It is distinguished from the related Stichodactyla gigantea and S. mertensii by the absence of colour, spots or markings on its underside and down its column. It immobilises prey with toxins such as SHTX and hosts six species of anemonefish.
