Blastomussa vivida
A Blastomussa described as a new species by Benzoni and colleagues in 2014. Colonies consist of corallites that rise from a common base and separate as they grow, and the species is known for vivid red and green colouring. Japan supplies the most records.
Blastomussa vivida was described in 2014 by Benzoni, Arrigoni and Hoeksema. It was separated as a distinct species during a review of material previously assigned to the genus, using both skeletal morphology and molecular data. The specimen records aggregated by GBIF are dominated by Japan, followed by New Caledonia and Malaysia, with further records from Fiji, Brunei, Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. Colonies consist of corallites that rise from a common base and separate as they grow, and the corallites are larger than those of B. merleti. Colours are vivid, running through red, orange and green, and specimens with contrasting oral discs are favoured in the trade. Husbandry follows the rest of the genus: moderate light, low flow and placement low in the tank. As a scleractinian it is on CITES Appendix II.
