About
Homophyllia bowerbanki is a large-polyp stony coral of the family Lobophylliidae found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. It was long treated as Acanthastrea bowerbanki or Acanthastrea hillae, and those names persist in the trade, but current WoRMS classification places it in Homophyllia. When inflated the polyps become fleshy enough to hide the skeleton, and specimens with strong contrast between a green ground and red or orange oral discs are highly valued for display. The species is moderately common, but predation by crown-of-thorns starfish and habitat loss have raised concern about its decline. Moderate lighting and low to moderate flow suit it, and excessive light causes fading. Target-feeding minced fish or shrimp to the feeding tentacles it extends at night improves colour and growth. As a scleractinian it falls under CITES Appendix II.
