About
The roller canary, or Harz Roller, is a song canary breed raised in the mining towns of the Upper Harz in Germany. Miners from Imst are said to have brought canaries there around 1730, and by the mid-19th century the breed had won worldwide fame. Its song is clear-toned, alternating beats, trills and rolling tours, and is delivered with the bill almost closed. The song is built mainly from four tours - Hohlrolle, Knorre, Pfeife and Hohlklingel - of which the Hohlrolle counts most. Plumage ranges from a dark green close to the wild type to yellow and white, with cinnamon and variegated birds appearing more recently. Because it is judged on song, form and colour are secondary, and young males are trained by listening to older tutors.
