The lizard canary is a marked breed in which scale-like spangles run in regular rows down the back and flanks, and it is regarded as the oldest surviving canary breed. In 18th-century England it was called the fine spangled sort, and a 1742 record describes birds with a scaled back, black wings and tail, and a cap on the crown. The name lizard first appeared in print in 1825. The plumage is dark, close to the wild type, with a silky sheen. The breed all but vanished from Britain after the Second World War, but the Lizard Canary Association of Great Britain was founded on 13 May 1945 and preserved it from fewer than fifty pairs. Judging follows a ten-point standard centred on the symmetrical arrangement of light and dark.
