About
The border canary, or Border Fancy, arose in the border country between England and Scotland. Scottish keepers called their birds the Common Canary while English breeders across the line called the same bird the Cumberland Fancy, and each side claimed the breed until a joint meeting on 5 July 1890 settled the dispute and founded The Border Fancy Canary Club, fixing the name. The breed is defined by a rounded, well-proportioned body, silky and evenly coloured plumage, and an elegant stance, and all canary colours and variegation are admitted except red. The COM international standard sets the maximum size at 5 3/4 inches, or 14.6 cm. Housing and feeding match other type and colour canaries, but the diet must be rich in lutein so the yellow lipochrome develops fully.
