Purple-crested Turaco

The purple-crested turaco (Gallirex porphyreolophus) is a turaco of south-eastern Africa from Kenya and Tanzania to South Africa. The International Ornithological Congress and others place it in Gallirex, while CITES and GBIF use the name Tauraco porphyreolophus. It is about 40 cm long. A purple crest, which looks black out of direct sun, sits above a green head, with a red eye-ring and black bill. The neck and chest are green and brown, the rest of the body purplish, and crimson flight feathers flash in flight. The absence of a white eye patch separates it from other turacos. The sexes are alike. It lives in moist woodland and evergreen forest and is very shy, often seen only when it flies between trees. It runs nimbly along branches and bounds from one to another. It eats mainly whole fruit and is considered an important seed disperser, carrying seeds such as those of cycads long distances and regurgitating them intact. It is the national bird of Eswatini, and its crimson flight feathers are used in Swazi royal regalia. In captivity it needs a fruit-based diet and a large, tall aviary; in Japan it is kept mainly in zoos and rarely offered to private keepers.
