The mitred conure (Psittacara mitratus) inhabits the eastern Andean slope in Argentina, Bolivia and Peru. Three subspecies are recognised alongside the nominate: tucumanus and chologenys. It has been introduced and established in Uruguay, with substantial populations in California and Florida and smaller numbers in Hawaii. Long placed in Aratinga, it was moved to Psittacara around 2013. It is fairly common in the United States trade.
