The blue-crowned conure (Thectocercus acuticaudatus) ranges widely from eastern Colombia to Curacao in the Caribbean and south to northern Argentina. It favours savanna-like country, light woodland and forest edges, and avoids dense humid forest such as the Amazon. Five subspecies are recognised: acuticaudatus, neumanni, haemorrhous, koenigi and neoxena. It is fairly common in the United States trade but scarce elsewhere. Trade volumes have been heavy, and while the IUCN lists it as Least Concern it notes the population is decreasing.
