The crimson-bellied conure (Pyrrhura perlata) occurs in the southern Amazon of Bolivia and Brazil. Its defining feature is the deep crimson centre of the belly; the breast carries pale-edged scaling and the cheeks shade from yellow-green into blue below, with the upper breast washed blue too. Its nomenclature is tangled: from the mid-1800s it was called Pyrrhura rhodogaster, but a 1983 review established that the type specimen of Pyrrhura perlata belonged to this species, so the names were exchanged. No subspecies are recognised. It is rare in captivity, and the World Parrot Trust recommends housing at least 2 m long.
