The black-capped conure (Pyrrhura rupicola) inhabits the southwestern Amazon and the eastern Andean slope in Peru, Bolivia and Brazil. In aviculture it is also called the black-capped or rock conure. Two subspecies are recognised, the nominate rupicola and sandiae. It lives in humid forest from the Amazonian lowlands up to 1,000 m on the eastern Andean slope. Despite continuing deforestation in the Amazon the IUCN lists it as Least Concern, with a stable population of 100,000-500,000 mature individuals. It is uncommon in captivity, and the World Parrot Trust recommends housing at least 2 m long.
