Standard grain size is 1-5mm, with a subdued black to gray color. The advantages of oiso sand are its near-permanent usability, easy cleaning, and minimal effect on water chemistry. When using a gravel vacuum to remove debris from the substrate, the gravel doesn't get sucked up easily, making it convenient to handle. Note that new oiso sand may contain shell fragments that dissolve and raise pH and KH. If keeping fish that prefer slightly acidic water, acid-treat the sand first (soak in food-grade vinegar for several days) to dissolve the shell fragments. Since oiso sand contains no nutrients, solid fertilizer tabs need to be buried near plant roots when growing aquatic plants.
