Classification by Body Type

The most important factor in goldfish compatibility is body type classification. Goldfish are broadly divided into "wakin-type (slim-bodied)" and "round-bodied (ryukin-type)" groups. Wakin-types have streamlined bodies and swim fast -- including wakin, comets, shubunkin, and Bristol shubunkin. Round-bodied types have globular bodies and swim slowly -- including ryukin, oranda, ranchu, telescope-eye, and azuma-nishiki. Mixing these two groups is the combination to avoid most. Round-bodied fish cannot keep up with wakin-types' fast swimming, failing to reach food and becoming malnourished, or being chased and weakened by stress.
