Despite its name, it isn't related to the South American plecos most aquarists know — its most distinctive trait is a flat, disc-shaped body that lets it cling tightly to rocks. Its body is covered in fine speckles, and in the aquarium it spends its time grazing on algae growing on rock surfaces. Because it thrives in strong current with cold, oxygen-rich water, keeping the tank conditions right takes some experience, making it a fish best suited to intermediate keepers. It isn't considered a good tankmate for goldfish, which prefer calmer water.
