Julidochromis transcriptus, known as the Masked Julie, is one of the smallest species in its genus, easily recognized by the bold black-and-white checkered pattern along its body. In the wild it is found only along a limited stretch of the Congo side of Lake Tanganyika, where it glides along rock faces rather than swimming freely through open water. Pairs bond tightly and defend a small territory together, coordinating to drive off intruders — a display of teamwork that gives the species real character. Territorial and strong-willed as it is, its compact size and rock-loving nature make it a rewarding centerpiece for a rockwork-based aquascape.

關於面具短鯛
One of the smallest Julidochromis species, marked with a bold black-and-white checkered pattern. Pairs defend a small territory among the rocks of Lake Tanganyika.
迎接面具短鯛前需要了解的7件事
1Rockwork Is Non-Negotiable
Arrange rocks into caves and overlapping ledges so every fish has somewhere to retreat. Without enough hiding spots, a weaker fish gets chased constantly and may even jump from the tank trying to escape.
2Pairs Defend Their Turf
This species pairs up and fiercely guards a small territory, and same-species tankmates can end up in prolonged chases. Give the tank plenty of rocky cover and open space so less dominant fish have somewhere to retreat.
3Choose Tankmates Carefully
Despite its bold attitude, this is a small fish that can be bullied by larger or more aggressive species. Similarly sized, calm Lake Tanganyika cichlids make the safest companions.
4Keep the Water Alkaline
In the wild, Lake Tanganyika water is hard and strongly alkaline. Avoid sudden water changes and use substrate or water treatments that help maintain a stable, slightly alkaline pH.
5An Intermediate-Level Fish
With solid water quality management and an understanding of its territorial behavior, this species is manageable for intermediate keepers. Overcrowding and a lack of hiding places are the main sources of stress, so set up the habitat carefully.
6Stays Compact as an Adult
Even fully grown, it reaches only about 6 to 7 cm, making it one of the smaller Julidochromis species. A large tank isn't required — thoughtful rockwork can make even a modest setup work well.
7Prepare the Tank Before Arrival
Because this fish stakes out territory quickly, it helps to arrange the rockwork and stabilize water parameters before bringing one home. A ready environment lets it settle in with far less stress.
面具短鯛的常見問題
- Q.Can this fish live with other species?
- A.It can be kept with similarly sized, calm Lake Tanganyika cichlids. Since it's strongly territorial, provide plenty of rockwork for hiding places and watch how the combination settles in.
- Q.How big a tank does it need?
- A.Since adults reach only about 6 to 7 cm, a large tank isn't strictly necessary. That said, because it defends a territory, arrange the rockwork to create multiple separate hiding areas.
- Q.How can I tell males from females?
- A.Males and females look almost identical, so telling them apart by color or pattern alone is difficult. Raising several individuals together and letting them pair up naturally makes it easier to spot a male-female match once they mature.
- Q.Is this a good fish for beginners?
- A.It's generally considered an intermediate-level fish, requiring some understanding of water quality management and territorial behavior. Keepers with some prior experience can house it successfully by setting up plenty of rockwork.
- Q.Does CITES apply to this species?
- A.No, Julidochromis transcriptus is not listed under CITES.
