The Thrianta was developed from 1938 by Dutch schoolteacher H. Andreae and admitted to the Dutch standard on 1 May 1940; the name comes from an old name for the province of Drenthe. The breed almost vanished during the Second World War and was rebuilt by crossing with Sachsengold rabbits smuggled out of East Germany. It reached England in 1980 and the United States in 1992, gaining recognition from the American Rabbit Breeders Association (ARBA) in 2006 and from the British Rabbit Council (BRC). Its defining feature is a vivid solid red-orange coat likened to an Irish Setter, soft, dense and of medium length. The body is compact and short with a barrel-shaped trunk, short sturdy legs and upright red ears. Small and easy to handle, it is maintained by only a few breeders in Japan.
