Australian rosette guinea pig with a shaggy yak-like coat. Active and curious with a uniquely charming unkempt appearance.
The Sheba Mini Yak (also known as the 'bad hair day' guinea pig) is an Australian breed developed in the 1970s through crosses among Abyssinian, Peruvian, and other rosette and long-haired breeds. Adults measure 20–28 cm and weigh 700–1,100 g. Their coat is a wild mixture of rosettes and long hair that grows in multiple, contradictory directions, creating an endearingly disheveled appearance. The deliberately 'messy' aesthetic—sometimes humorously described as a perpetual bad hair day—is the defining appeal of this breed. The naturally tousled coat requires less intensive grooming than breeds like the Texel or Peruvian; however, regular checks for mats and soiling are still necessary, particularly around the hindquarters. Their temperament is lively and inquisitive. Diet consists of unlimited timothy hay and daily vitamin C. Common health concerns include scurvy and dermatitis. Lifespan is 4–7 years.
