Ridgeback Guinea Pig

The Ridgeback is a guinea pig breed with a short, soft coat and a single ridge of erect hair running along the spine from between the ears to the hips. The British Cavy Council's guide standard requires the ridge to be 'pronounced, unbroken, erect and straight', up to about 2.5 cm high, most pronounced at the shoulder and tapering toward the rear, on a short, cobby body with good width across the shoulders. Any colour or mixture of colours is allowed. The breed appears to derive from a coat-direction variation related to the rosetted Abyssinian, and the BCC states that any future full standard will be based on the Abyssinian's point allocation. It has been classed as a New and Emerging breed by the BCC since 1 January 2017 and is not recognized by ARBA or ACBA. Guinea pigs cannot synthesize vitamin C and need about 10 mg a day (20 mg when pregnant), and as strongly social herd animals they should be kept in groups of two or more. Their ideal temperature is the same as ours, 18-24 C, and sustained heat above 32 C is dangerous. In Japan the breed is available only occasionally through specialist breeders.

No breed-specific size data exist; pet guinea pigs in general measure 20-25 cm and weigh 700-1200 g, with an average lifespan of four to five years and some reaching eight.
