Short-haired guinea pig with a single rosette (crest) on the head. American Crested has a white crest. Easy to care for.
The Crested guinea pig is a short-haired breed distinguished by a single forward-facing rosette (the 'crest') located at the center of the forehead. Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 700–1,200 g. Two varieties are recognized: the American Crested, in which the crest matches the body color, and the English Crested, in which the crest is a different color (typically white) contrasting with the body. The short, smooth coat requires minimal grooming, making the Crested one of the easier guinea pig breeds to maintain. Their temperament is gentle and sociable; as with all guinea pigs, keeping two or more together is strongly recommended. Diet must include unlimited timothy hay and daily vitamin C supplementation, as guinea pigs lack the enzyme needed to synthesize it. Common health concerns include scurvy, urolithiasis, respiratory infections, and dental disease. Lifespan is 4–8 years.
