About
The Havana (Oryctolagus cuniculus) first appeared in the Netherlands in 1898 and was named for its rich chocolate coat that recalls Havana cigars. It is ancestral to several European breeds including the Fee de Marbourg, Perlefee and Gris Perle de Hal. The body is short, rounded and compact, and the intense sheen of the short dense coat is the key show point. The temperament is calm and settled, and the small size makes it a good choice for beginners. The short coat needs only weekly brushing, increased at moult. Hay as the staple diet prevents malocclusion and gut stasis. In Japan it can be obtained through rabbit specialty shops and breeders, but numbers are limited.
