The Silver Marten is a medium-sized American breed that arose as a by-product of efforts to improve the Chinchilla rabbit's colour. In the 1920s breeders introduced black-and-tan bloodlines into Chinchilla stock, which produced silver-and-black animals that bred true; the breed was established in 1924. ARBA recognized black and chocolate in 1927, blue in 1933 and sable in 1993. The marten pattern sets silver-white on the chin, belly, underside of the tail, inside of the ears, eye circles and nostrils against a dark self colour, with silver-tipped guard hairs scattered along the sides; the coat is a glossy short flyback. Black is the most common of the four varieties, followed by blue, while chocolate and sable are uncommon. The breed is active and playful and enjoys toys it can toss around the cage, though it is somewhat more timid than larger breeds and benefits from early socialization. The short coat needs only brushing about every two weeks, making it manageable for beginners. In Japan it is seen occasionally at rabbit specialist shops.
