Rex rabbit
Medium rabbit breed known for its plush, velvety fur. Intelligent and sociable with a beautiful coat texture.
The Rex rabbit originated in France in 1919 following the discovery of a recessive mutation (the rex gene) that alters hair structure. Adults measure 40–50 cm and weigh 3.5–4.5 kg. The rex mutation causes guard hairs to be the same length as the undercoat—both approximately 1.3 cm—resulting in a uniquely dense, plush, velvety fur that lies flat and stands upright. Historically prized by the fur industry for the exceptional quality of their pelt, Rex rabbits today are predominantly kept as companion animals. More than 16 coat color varieties are officially recognized. Their temperament is generally calm, intelligent, and sociable, with an inclination to bond with their owners. Diet consists of unlimited timothy hay, appropriate pellets, and fresh vegetables. Common health concerns include pododermatitis (sore hocks), dental malocclusion, and GI stasis. Lifespan is 5–8 years.
