Oryctolagus cuniculus
Adorable small lop-eared rabbit breed. Sweet, affectionate temperament with a compact round body and signature floppy ears.
The Holland Lop is a small lop-eared rabbit breed developed in the Netherlands during the 1950s by Adriann de Cock, through crosses between French Lop and Netherland Dwarf rabbits. Adults measure 30–35 cm and weigh 1.4–1.8 kg. Their characteristic lopped ears, round compact head, and stocky body have made them one of the most popular rabbit breeds worldwide. They are known for their gentle, curious, and often affectionate temperament when properly socialized from a young age. Housing requires a cage of at least 60 cm width with daily free-roaming exercise. Diet should consist of unlimited timothy hay, limited pellets (1.5–2% of body weight), and fresh leafy greens. The folded ears restrict air circulation in the ear canal, predisposing them to otitis externa. Regular ear checks are essential. Other common health concerns include dental malocclusion and gastrointestinal stasis. Lifespan is 8–12 years.
