Oryzias latipes
An improved medaka in which the cornea swells to form a bubble over the eye. Discovered in 2008 by a breeder named Kubokouchi, the trait has been recorded appearing by chance in many varieties. The best-known fixed example is Hitomi, a big-eye bubble-eye.
Bubble-eye is the trait in which the cornea swells so that a bubble forms over the eye. The Medaka Web Encyclopedia lists it as eye trait 20, explained in line with the Japan Medaka Association classification manual. It was discovered in 2008 by Mr Kubokouchi and has been recorded appearing by chance in a variety of lines. The best-known fixed example is Hitomi, a big-eye bubble-eye; in 2009 the trait was discussed alongside miyuki, tainaikou and youkihi transparent-scale as one of the talking points of the medaka world. As a variety, blue big-eye bubble-eye is the established form, created in 2015 by Tsutomu Niitani and certified as Japan Medaka Association new variety No.9. The encyclopedia registers it as type No.0671 under the classification name blue big-eye medaka, with bubble-eye recorded as a common sub-note. Only four varieties carrying the trait are registered in the encyclopedia, far fewer than for the other eye traits.

The Japan Medaka Association's classification manual sorts varieties by traits that can be seen rather than by genotype, and does not set out how individual traits are inherited. Traits the manual explicitly says can be passed on and produced by selective, multi-generation breeding are listed as line-bred; the rest are grouped under Other.

Prepared medaka food, green water
The bubble over the eye reads well from the side, so the trait can be appreciated in a side-viewed tank. The Medaka Web Encyclopedia recommends outdoor keeping and suggests shading half the container in summer.
Commercial prepared medaka food is the staple, given in an amount finished within a few minutes. Leftovers decay and foul the water, so adjust the quantity. Green water rich in phytoplankton suits fry rearing.
Slightly acidic to slightly alkaline water is considered ideal, and the water drifts toward acidic as keeping continues. Around one water change per week is the guideline, and because sudden shifts in temperature or pH cause stress, acclimatise new fish by floating the bag. FishBase records the wild water chemistry of this species as pH 7.0-8.0 and hardness 9-19 dH.
A peaceful schooling fish, normally kept as a group of the same variety. One litre of water per fish is the guideline against overcrowding; overstocking causes poor growth, reduced breeding, oxygen shortage and water fouling.
Outdoors the spawning season runs from about April to October, once water reaches 18C or above with 12-13 hours of daylight. For year-round indoor breeding, 25-28C water and over 13 hours of lighting are the guideline. Eggs hatch at a cumulative 250 degree-days, about 10 days at 25C.
The bubble is a swollen cornea and is easily damaged, so take care with container walls, decor and netting. The trait often appears by chance, and the number of fixed lines is limited.
