A golden-colored Allotopus stag beetle species. A beautiful species from Borneo highlands.
Allotopus moellenkampi, the Moellenkamp's golden stag beetle, inhabits highland forests of Borneo and is one of the most accessible representatives of the coveted Allotopus genus. The entire body shimmers in a brilliant golden metallic sheen, with adults reaching 40–75 mm in length. As a highland species, it cannot tolerate heat; captive temperatures must be strictly maintained at 18–24°C. Humidity management is paramount—the enclosure must remain consistently moist, as desiccation is rapidly fatal. Larval rearing requires reishi (Ganoderma) fungal wood or equivalent specialized substrate; standard fungal substrate bottles are generally unsuitable. Egg-laying also requires appropriate fungal wood. Adults live approximately 3–6 months. Compared to other Allotopus species, A. moellenkampi is relatively more available in the trade, making it the recommended entry point for collectors drawn to the spectacular golden stag beetles.
