Golofa claviger was described by Linnaeus in 1771. Its range is given as Peru and Ecuador, and it measures 40-65 mm in males and 35-55 mm in females. The thoracic horn looks rhomboid, which is behind one of its Japanese names, and Peruvian stock is what mostly circulates today. Its habits in the wild are little studied, though it has been reported as a pest of oil palm in northern Brazil. Keep it at around 23-25C and use the same substrate egg-laying set as for other rhinoceros beetles; plain rhinoceros-beetle substrate works, but mixing in black soil is said to raise the number of eggs. Larvae are grown on the same substrate with a final bottle of 1400-1500 ml, and the larval period runs 10-12 months, occasionally two years. The BE-KUWA FY2025 edition lists a captive record of 67.7 mm.
