Kyo nishiki is the name given to the long-tailed fish that appear while breeding the Edo nishiki. The Edo nishiki is a calico ranchu-type created in the Showa era by crossing the ranchu with the azuma nishiki; it has been refined since but is still not a stabilised variety. That breeding sometimes throws fish whose caudal fin grows long, and these are called kyo nishiki. The result is the round, dorsal-less ranchu body carrying calico mottling in red, black and white with the pale blue of mosaic transparent scales, combined with an extended tail. Because it is not a fixed line, fish sold under the name vary considerably in tail length and in how the pattern falls.
