The hayato wakin is a wakin-shaped goldfish developed at the Makiki fish farm. It is described as a fixed form selected from the normal-scaled red and variegated fish that appeared in lines of the hayato nishiki, itself derived from the jumbo azumanishiki without head growth and with a short tail. Scale type and colour are therefore what separate it from the transparent-scaled, calico hayato nishiki. It is deep-bodied, more solid and thicker through than an ordinary wakin, and is called the largest-growing of the wakin types, sometimes reaching around 40cm. Since its line traces back to the jumbo azumanishiki, shops note that it is not strictly a wakin at all. It moves through Kyushu producers and a few specialist shops. Provide volume and filtration for the size it will reach, and the swimming room a wakin-type fish needs.
