About
The Belgian Tervuren is one of the four varieties of the Belgian Shepherd Dog (FCI No.15) and, with the Groenendael, one of the two long-haired varieties. The long-haired varieties are separated by colour: the Tervueren must be fawn or grey with black overlay and a black mask. The FCI standard prefers fawn, and a light, washed-out colour or brindling is a fault. The mask should be pronounced enough to join the lips, corners of the mouth and eyelids into one black zone. The coat is short on the head, outer ears and lower legs and long and straight on the body, forming a ruff and apron on the neck and chest, fringes on the back of the forelegs, culottes on the thighs and a plumed tail. Matings between varieties are forbidden except by special permission. The AKC treats the Tervuren as a separate breed and recommends screening breeding stock for hip and elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy and epilepsy. Playful and sensitive, it responds better to training built around play than to harsh methods. It needs vigorous exercise every day and suits owners who can spend active time with it. In Japan the JKC registers each variety separately; only 19 Tervuren were registered in 2024.
