Tridacna squamosa
Reaching 45 cm in shell length, with large, widely spaced leaf-like scutes on the shell that give it its Japanese name and the English name fluted clam. The mantle is usually brown or gold-toned.
Tridacna squamosa ranges from East Africa and the Red Sea to the Pitcairn Islands, north to southern Japan and south to Queensland and New Caledonia. Large, leaf-like scutes stand at intervals across the shell, and both the Japanese name and the English name fluted clam refer to them. These scutes are most developed in juveniles, where they help deter predators. Zooxanthellae live in the mantle, which is usually brown or gold with green or blue markings. Its mantle colours are plainer than those of T. crocea or T. maxima, but the sculpture of the shell is valued in its own right. It attaches to rock by byssal threads without boring deeply, so it can be placed on sand or on rock. The IUCN assessed it as Least Concern in 2024, but as a member of the Tridacnidae it is covered by the blanket CITES Appendix II listing.

LiveAquaria lists moderate to high lighting. It is less light-hungry than T. crocea, but it depends just as much on photosynthesis in the mantle and will decline under insufficient light.
