About
Pavona divaricata is a stony coral of the family Agariciidae described by Lamarck in 1816. WoRMS records it from East Africa, Madagascar, Mauritius, the Seychelles and India to Singapore, Fiji and American Samoa, where it has been photographed in the National Park of American Samoa. It hosts zooxanthellae, lives on shallow reefs at 1-20 m and is recorded to about 50 cm (Reeflex). Detailed accessible descriptions of its form are scarce, and Corals of the World has no species factsheet for it. It is hard to separate by appearance from relatives such as P. cactus and P. frondifera, so buyers often have to rely on the shop label. Reeflex notes that no successful long-term aquarium keeping has been reported, so it suits experienced keepers. The Pavona genus entry on this site covers the general traits and care of the genus. Domestic law: Collecting in Japanese waters is governed by each prefecture's fisheries adjustment regulations, which differ by prefecture. Okinawa bans all collection of reef-building corals, including stony corals, and also bans possessing or selling illegally collected corals (cultured corals are exempt, and the prefecture advises buyers to confirm a coral is cultured, on an artificial base or tagged). Tokyo bans collection in the waters off Ogasawara Village. In marine park zones of national and quasi-national parks, taking designated animals and plants requires a permit (Natural Parks Act, Art. 22).
All stony corals (Scleractinia) are listed in CITES Appendix II (checked on Species+). International trade requires export permits, but no registration is needed to sell or transfer specimens within Japan.
