Oxypora lacera
A lobophylliid reef coral that spreads as thin plates. Known as the ragged chalice coral, its plates are perforated and spiny on the underside, and most colonies are greyish brown with red or green oral discs.
Oxypora lacera, the ragged chalice coral or porous lettuce coral, is a large-polyp lobophylliid stony coral of the western Indo-Pacific. Colonies can be encrusting, plate-like or lumpy, and the form often varies within a single colony. On thin laminar plates a few millimetres thick the corallites are delicate and about 5 mm across; near the point of attachment the coral is thicker and the corallites coarser. Septa-costae run between the corallites and bear spines, the underside of the plates is spiny, and the plates are perforated. Colonies are greyish brown or grey, sometimes tinged green, and the oral discs may be red or green. They seldom exceed 30 cm across. The range runs from the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to Japan, the South China Sea and eastern, northern and western Australia, on sheltered reef slopes down to about 30 m. The IUCN rates it Least Concern, and as a scleractinian it is on CITES Appendix II.

LiveAquaria gives low to moderate lighting for chalice corals. This species grows deep on sheltered slopes, so strong light is unnecessary; place it from the sand bed to mid-height.
Medium flow, randomised so detritus does not settle on the plates. It extends sweeper tentacles at night, so leave space between it and its neighbours.
Water 24-26C, specific gravity 1.023-1.025, salinity 33-35 ppt, KH 8-12. It consumes calcium and magnesium, so test and replenish them regularly.
Most of its nutrition comes from its zooxanthellae. The corallites are delicate, so feed small amounts of fine to small particulate coral food after lights-out.
Underwater it is easily confused with Echinophyllia aspera. Its drab colouring makes it inconspicuous, but it is a common species. As a scleractinian it is on CITES Appendix II and international trade requires permits.
