Echinopora lamellosa
A merulinid reef coral that spreads as thin plates overlapping in whorls. Known as the hedgehog coral, it carries small corallites scattered over the upper surface, and the green or brown plate margins make it a popular species.
Echinopora lamellosa, the hedgehog coral, is a reef-building merulinid coral. The distribution records held by WoRMS run from the Red Sea, East Africa, Kenya, Somalia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Mauritius, the Seychelles, the Maldives and Chagos to Indonesia, the Philippines, Fiji, the Marshall Islands, American Samoa and Australia. Colonies spread horizontally as thin plates overlapping in whorls, and large ones exceed a metre across. The corallites protrude only slightly and occur only on the upper surface, with spiny projections covering the skeleton between them. Colonies are brown or green, and specimens with brightly outlined plate margins are favoured in the trade. It grows well under moderate light and moderate flow and is fast-growing, but the plates extend horizontally and shade whatever is beneath them, so it needs room. As a scleractinian it is on CITES Appendix II.

Mainly nutrition from symbiotic zooxanthellae, supplemented with fine particulate coral foods offered at night.
LiveAquaria gives moderate lighting for corals in this family. The plates spread horizontally, so choose a spot where light falls evenly on the upper surface, and start at reduced intensity.
Medium flow, randomised so detritus does not settle on the plates. It extends horizontally and shades corals beneath it, so leave room around it.
Water 24-26C, specific gravity 1.023-1.025, salinity 33-35 ppt, KH 8-12. It consumes calcium and magnesium, so test and replenish them regularly.
Most of its nutrition comes from its zooxanthellae. The corallites are small, so feed only small amounts of fine particulate coral food after lights-out.
The plate margins are thin and break easily, so never handle the coral by its edge. It grows fast and can reach an adjacent rock within a few months. As a scleractinian it is on CITES Appendix II.
Beginner. This is a beginner-friendly species. No special equipment or experience is required, and it can be kept successfully with basic care setup.
The ideal temperature for Echinopora Lamellosa is 24〜27℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
Echinopora Lamellosa typically reaches Colonies from several tens of cm to over 1 m as an adult. Size may vary depending on care conditions and individual genetics.
