Montipora aequituberculata
A plating Montipora forming horizontal, dish-like colonies with undulating, overlapping margins. The epithet refers to its evenly sized tubercles. An SPS that prefers strong light.
Montipora aequituberculata is a reef-building acroporid found widely across the tropical and subtropical Indo-Pacific. SeaLifeBase gives its depth range as 0-59 m, one of the broadest in the genus. Colonies are dish-shaped, built from thin horizontal plates whose margins undulate and overlap. Evenly sized tubercles cover the surface, and the epithet aequituberculata, meaning with equal tubercles, refers to this. Colour may be green, brown or purple, and the plate margin is often rimmed in a contrasting shade. It is zooxanthellate and draws most of its nutrition from photosynthesis. In the aquarium the plates spread horizontally, so allow for the shade they will cast on corals beneath. Give strong light and randomised flow that keeps detritus off the upper surface, and keep alkalinity and calcium stable. The IUCN assessed it as Endangered in 2023, and as a scleractinian it is listed on CITES Appendix II.
