About
Montipora confusa is a reef-building acroporid described by Nemenzo in 1967. Colonies have an encrusting or laminar base from which irregular column-like branches rise. On the branches the coenosteum ridges form a distinctive flame-shaped pattern, which is the character that separates it from its congeners. Colour is yellowish or greenish brown, usually with pale coenosteum ridges and plate margins. It grows in shallow reef environments, especially lagoons. The species is uncommon but distinctive; it is confused with Montipora vietnamensis and M. cebuensis, and where they do not occur together it is difficult to tell from M. undata. The IUCN assessed it as Endangered (EN, criterion A3ce) on 27 April 2023, making it a species of particular conservation concern within the genus. As a scleractinian it is listed on CITES Appendix II.
