Anthelia spp.
A xeniid soft coral that raises polyps with eight pinnate tentacles from a thin creeping base. The polyps are not retractile and a colony looks like a mat of snowflakes or pom-poms. Colour is usually white, tan or grey.
Anthelia is a genus of octocoral soft corals in the family Xeniidae, order Malacalcyonacea, found on shallow reefs of the Indo-West Pacific including the Red Sea; WoRMS accepts thirteen species, among them Anthelia glauca. Polyps with eight pinnate tentacles rise from a thin, leathery creeping base. Unlike other genera in the family the polyps are not retractile, and a colony takes on a snowflake or tufted appearance; where several thick-stemmed polyps grow together they resemble a cheerleader's pom-pom. Colour is usually white, tan or grey. The genus is zooxanthellate and draws most of its nutrition from photosynthesis. When conditions suit, the base creeps and the colony spreads quickly over adjacent rock. The tissue is soft and easily damaged by predatory fish, crabs and snails or by the stings of other corals, so keep space between it and other sessile animals. As a soft coral with no stony skeleton it is not covered by the CITES coral listings.

LiveAquaria lists Anthelia as a high-light coral needing medium to strong illumination; in low light the polyps do not extend fully.
LiveAquaria gives placement as bottom and flow as medium, recommending medium to strong water movement. It creeps as it spreads, so mount it on rock kept apart from other corals.
Water 24-26C, specific gravity 1.023-1.025 (salinity 33-35 ppt), pH 8.1-8.4, KH 8-12. Iodine and trace elements are recommended.
Most of its nutrition comes from photosynthesis, but LiveAquaria also calls for weekly feedings of micro-plankton or foods designed for filter-feeding invertebrates.
The tissue is soft and easily damaged by fish, crabs and snails or by the stings of other corals. It grows fast and blankets rockwork, so remove excess growth early. Having no stony skeleton, it is not covered by the CITES coral listings.
