Acropora valida
A variable Acropora whose colonies sometimes exceed 0.5 m across. The axial corallites are small and the appressed radial corallites vary in size. Colour is brown, cream or yellow, with branch tips that are sometimes purple.
Acropora valida has one of the widest ranges in the genus, reaching from the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden through the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf, the central Indo-Pacific, Australia, Southeast Asia, Japan and the East China Sea to the western, central and far eastern Pacific, the northwestern Hawaiian Islands and Johnston Atoll. It occupies a wide variety of shallow tropical reef habitats at depths of 1-15 m. Colony shape is variable and diameters sometimes exceed 0.5 m. The axial corallites are small and the appressed radial corallites come in a range of sizes. Colour is brown, cream or yellow with occasionally purple branch tips, and it closely resembles Acropora variabilis. Its wide range and tolerance make it one of the more forgiving Acropora to keep, though its water-quality requirements are those of the genus. The IUCN assessed it as Endangered in 2023 and it is listed on CITES Appendix II.
