Acropora austera
A fast-growing Indo-Pacific Acropora dispersed by ocean currents. It grows on upper reef slopes, especially where exposed to turbulence, and on mid reef slopes swept by strong currents.
Acropora austera was described by James Dwight Dana in 1846 as Madrepora austera. It ranges widely across the Indo-Pacific, between 29N and 34S and from 27E to 135W, and is known as a fast-growing species dispersed by ocean currents. SeaLifeBase records it subtidally at depths of 3-20 m in almost all reef habitats, and particularly on upper reef slopes exposed to turbulence and on mid reef slopes swept by strong currents. That preference for high-energy water translates directly into how flow should be set up for it in the aquarium. WoRMS treats Acropora parahemprichii, described by Veron in 2000, as a synonym. The IUCN assessed it as Endangered in 2023 and it is listed on CITES Appendix II.
