Golden hamster
Long-haired variety of Golden Hamster. Fluffy coat resembles a teddy bear. Gentle and easy to tame, ideal for beginners.
The teddy bear hamster is a long-haired variety of the Syrian (golden) hamster (Mesocricetus auratus), developed through selective breeding for an extended coat. Adults measure 15–20 cm and weigh 100–150 g. Males develop notably longer coats (5–6 cm) than females, creating the plush, stuffed-animal appearance that gives the variety its name. Their behavioral characteristics mirror those of the standard Syrian hamster: strictly solitary, territorial, and primarily nocturnal. They should always be housed individually. Coat care is an added responsibility compared to short-haired Syrians: bedding material must be smooth to avoid tangling, and weekly brushing is recommended. The lower back area is particularly prone to mat formation. Housing requires a cage of at least 45 cm width with a 20 cm diameter wheel. Optimal temperature is 20–26 °C. Common health concerns include wool block, tumors, and diabetes. Lifespan is 2–3 years.
