The Panda Mouse (Mus musculus) is a small fancy mouse with black-and-white piebald markings, taxonomically a domestic strain of the house mouse. Black-and-white spotted house mice were kept in Japan from the Edo period under the name Nishiki-nezumi. The line vanished domestically, but small spotted mice called Japanese continued to be kept as pets in Europe, and DNA studies confirmed they descend from house mice that came from Japan. They are now kept in Japan again as Panda Mice. They are social: females can be kept in groups, but males fight and may kill each other, so are not housed together. Mice regulate body temperature poorly and suffer from draughts and temperature swings, so provide deep bedding for nesting. They move fast and are sensitive to light and noise, so handle briefly in a quiet place. They are the same species as the existing Fancy Mouse entry and share its care essentials.
