Prosopocoilus wallacei
A stoutly built saw stag beetle from Halmahera, Seram and nearby Indonesian islands. The body is a deep almost-black brown with a fine cream line along the edge of the elytra, and the captive record is 79.3mm.
Prosopocoilus wallacei occurs on Halmahera, Seram and nearby Indonesian islands and is stoutly built for a saw stag beetle. Males measure 37.1-74.0mm and females 29.2-37mm; the BE-KUWA 2025 edition gives a captive record of 79.3mm (Ikai Takao, registered 2022) and a wild record of 75.9mm. The body is a deep, almost black brown, dull in males and strongly glossy in females, with a fine cream line along the edge of the elytra. It closely resembles Prosopocoilus bison but is told apart by the male's lack of an inner tooth at the base of the mandible. It gathers mainly at sap and also comes to lights. Along with its relatives Prosopocoilus hasterti and Prosopocoilus laffertei, it grips bark unusually strongly for a saw stag. Larvae take about a year to reach adulthood. It tolerates changes in its surroundings fairly well and is traded as live stock.

Beetle jelly (mainly tree sap in the wild); larvae on fermented substrate or fungus bottles
Follow the standard routine for foreign saw stags and hold adults and larvae near 20-24C. It tolerates change fairly well, but do not let winter temperatures fall below 18C.
Set a log buried in fermented substrate at around 23-25C. Larvae take about a year to reach adulthood.
Like other Prosopocoilus it is fierce and males sometimes kill females. House both sexes singly and pair only briefly under supervision.
As a general rule for foreign saw stags adults live about 8-10 months. Expect a larval period of about a year.
It grips bark strongly, so never pull it off by force. It is separated from the similar Prosopocoilus bison by the absence of an inner tooth at the mandible base.
Beginner. This is a beginner-friendly species. No special equipment or experience is required, and it can be kept successfully with basic care setup.
The ideal temperature for Wallace's Saw Stag Beetle is 20〜24℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
The average lifespan of Wallace's Saw Stag Beetle is About 8-10 months as adults, the general rule for foreign saw stag beetles. With proper care and nutrition, they can live a long and healthy life.
