The Okinoerabu flat stag (Dorcus titanus okinoerabuanus) is a subspecies of Dorcus titanus from Okinoerabujima in the Amami Islands of Kagoshima, described in 1985; many sources spell the name okinoerabuensis. Males measure 45-70.1 mm and females 25-35 mm; the BE-KUWA captive record is 70.1 mm (2010) and the wild record 67.6 mm, medium-sized among Japan's island subspecies. Okinoerabujima is a raised coral island between Tokunoshima and Yoronjima with limited forest, and the subspecies lives in its remaining evergreen broadleaf woodland. Ecology matches other flat stags: it gathers at sap, is nocturnal and hides in hollows and under logs. Females lay in the buried base of dead trees or under fallen logs; larvae take 1-2 years and adults live 1-3 years. At 20-26 C it breeds with logs and fermented substrate. It is very aggressive and males often kill females, so keep singly except for pairing. As one of the subspecies that evolved on each Amami island, never release captive beetles, to prevent genetic contamination.
