Prosopocoilus mohnikei was described by Parry in 1873. The specimen records aggregated in GBIF run from Sabah and Sarawak in Malaysia through Phuket and Phetchaburi in southern Thailand to West Sumatra and West Kalimantan in Indonesia and Tanintharyi in southern Myanmar, showing a range centred on Sundaland. The GBIF Backbone recognises the nominate form plus one subspecies, pseudospineus Mizunuma, 1994. The BE-KUWA 2025 edition gives a captive record of 56.5mm for the nominate form (Nakaya Kenichi, registered 2006), a wild record of 59.2mm and a predicted maximum of 65mm, together with a smallest captive record of 25.2mm. Small for a Prosopocoilus, it is not widely traded in Japan. Care follows the standard routine for foreign saw stags at around 20-24C.
