Scolopendra dawydoffi
A reddish-orange centipede from Laos, Vietnam and Thailand with dark bands on the rear of each tergite, exceeding 16 cm. Described in 1938 as a subspecies of S. subspinipes and raised to species in 2012.
Scolopendra dawydoffi is a large centipede of Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia that exceeds 16 cm. The whole body is bright reddish-orange with a dark band at the rear of each tergite; it is distinct from the similarly red S. hardwickei, and the antennae have 17-18 articles. Attems described it incompletely in 1938 as S. subspinipes cingulatoides, noting it combined traits of S. subspinipes and S. cingulata. The 2012 revision raised it to species and renamed it after the collector Dawydoff to avoid confusion with S. cingulatoides, a synonym of S. cingulata. It is predatory, mainly on insects, but has been recorded eating the snake Sibynophis triangularis while it was laying eggs. In Japan it is sold as the red dragon, a name also applied to regional forms of S. dehaani. The venom is potent; do not handle.
