Pamphobeteus sp. "Machala" is a large terrestrial tarantula traded as an undescribed member of the genus Pamphobeteus. There is no formal description, so the scientific name is unsettled and no describing author exists. The genus was erected by Pocock in 1901 and, as of February 2023, contained eighteen valid species. It ranges across Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Panama and includes some of the largest spiders in the world. Generic characters include a spoon-shaped or slender embolus and a bifid tibial apophysis on the first leg in males, while females are distinguished from all genera except Xenesthis and Longilyra by the large fused base of the spermathecae. Many species in the genus are also known for the bright colours of mature males. Buyers should confirm the trade name and provenance with the seller.
