Poecilotheria subfusca
An arboreal tarantula endemic to Sri Lanka. The large dark abdomen carries a folium of three linked dark spots, and the creamy chelicerae and patellae are distinctive. Highland and lowland forms are recognised, and the species is exceptionally fast.
Poecilotheria subfusca, described by Pocock in 1895, is an arboreal tarantula endemic to Sri Lanka. The female carapace is dark brown dorsally with pale margins, forming a starburst pattern. Highland and lowland forms are recognised and differ in habitat: highland populations occupy cooler, humid montane forest at roughly 18-22 C, lowland populations warmer forest at 24-29 C. It builds a silken retreat in cavities and bark fissures of mature trees and is nocturnal, staying hidden by day. Even within the genus it is exceptionally agile, moving rapidly both vertically and laterally. As an Old World species it lacks urticating hairs; the venom is medically significant, and bites by closely related species have caused intense pain and muscle cramps lasting days to weeks.

Live insects such as crickets and roaches
Aim for 20-24 C and 65-75% humidity. Mist occasionally but ventilate well to prevent mould. Prolonged heat or dryness is considered particularly harmful to the highland form.
Arboreal, so use a tall enclosure. Stand thick cork bark vertically as a tree-hollow retreat, provide a water dish, and leave the web intact once built.
Offer live insects such as crickets and roaches. It grows fast and feeds readily; wait 24-48 hours after a moult before feeding.
Very fast and skittish. It normally retreats into its hollow but bites if cornered. Adults are more defensive than juveniles and may strike with little visible warning, so it must not be handled.
Listed on CITES Appendix II, so international trade requires a permit, and it is listed as Endangered under the US Endangered Species Act. Deforestation is the main threat to its habitat. In the pet trade the lowland form is sometimes offered as Poecilotheria bara, but the World Spider Catalog treats that name as a synonym of this species, so the same spider can appear under both names.
Advanced. This is an advanced-level species. It requires specialized equipment and advanced husbandry skills with precise environmental control.
The ideal temperature for Ivory Ornamental is 20〜24℃. Recommended humidity is 65〜75%. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
