Macrothele raveni Zhu, Li & Song, 2000 is a mygalomorph spider of the family Macrothelidae, described in 2000 from Guangxi, China, and said to be found throughout Ningming County. Macrothele was formerly placed in the funnel-web family Hexathelidae, so in Japan it is sold as a 'Chinese funnel-web spider'. However, the spiders designated as invasive alien species under Japan's Invasive Alien Species Act are all species of Atrax and Hadronyche, and this species belongs to neither genus. Among spiders, an identification certificate on import is required only for Atrax, Hadronyche, Loxosceles and Latrodectus, which do not include Macrothele. Several toxins have been isolated from its venom for research, but little is documented about the effects of a bite on people. It should be kept on the assumption that bites must be avoided, as with other large mygalomorphs. Primary sources on its size and care are also scarce, and it is only rarely available in Japan.
